When should toddlers start wearing shoes?
There is no exact consensus on the age toddler should start wearing shoes.
Most toddlers start walking at around 12 months, but it could be a little earlier or even a little later. 1 of my children and struck walking until 18 months turned out perfectly fine!
The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) states that barefoot is best at first.
Walking barefoot at first can allow your children’s muscles and tendons to strengthen.
Around the house, it is safe to walk barefoot.
But when your children’s toddlers code site, you do not want to hurt the foot. That is when it makes sense to think about shoes for her toddler.
Shoes for Outdoors:
Your toddler can benefit from being barefoot inside. But they can benefit from protecting her feet by wearing some of the shoes outside.
How fast do feet grow?
According to the Academy of Pediatrics, children’s feet can and grow very quickly. This might mean that the shoe might not last more than a couple of months.
Personally, we do not go overboard with her children’s shoes because they may be too small very quickly in a matter of 3-4 months.
What makes a good toddler shoe?
As podiatrists, we look at 3 main components when choosing toddler shoes as well as adult shoes.
A deep heel cup:
The area of the heel should be supportive and not flexible.
This means that it holds your toddler’s heel vertical. Try to push it from the back and see if it bends over or becomes flexible. The more firm that heel, the better.
Toe Flexibility:
The shoe should bend at the toes but not elsewhere.
This means that it holds the heel straight, but your toddler can still bend her toes to bend it.
Firm Sole:
When grabbing the front and the back, see how to twist the ball this is.
The toes should only bend at the front and the back.
Checklist for choosing your Toddler’s Shoes:
- Their reality is, some of these factors are more important than a podiatrist’s recommendation.
- What this means is that after certain criteria are met, style and features may be more important.
Consider the following checklist when choosing your toddler’s shoe:
What is the Shoe for?
- Is this issue for inside the house? Is it a shoe for playing in the playground? Is it her shoe for going to church? Or is it a shoe for playing in wet or money conditions?
- You might not want a podiatrist-recommended running shoe for playing in the mud because this may be destroyed very quickly.
Does your child have any foot problems?
- The most common foot problem is being flat-footed or heel pain.
- If this is occurring, always see a podiatrist first. But if accurately diagnosed, more supportive shoes may be a better choice.
How much does it cost?
- Some shoes are costly. When considering the intended use, such as water might, this may be an expensive choice.
- Also, consider that your toddler’s foot may grow and only 3-4 months.
The preferred design?
- Do you want a sparkly or leather shoe for church, or do you want a water shoe material?
What seasons do you plan on using the shoe?
- Is this a winter shoe that you will hardly be using?
- Or is it a summer shoe that will get a lot of use?
- Factor this in when choosing your design!
